The general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Consuelo Rosauro, stressed that the management of waste is one of the priorities included in the Circular Economy Strategy of the Region and stressed that the 17,241 tons of plastic containers, cans and briks recycled during the past year "must be added another 17,992 tons of paper and cardboard and another 2,698 tons from the door-to-door collection of commercial paper and cardboard." These data reflect that the citizens of the Region are increasingly committed to the recycling and aware of the importance of protecting the environment ".

In addition to the recognition of Abarán as the most recyclable municipality, an award worth 6,000 euros, Cehegín was also awarded 5,000 euros as the municipality with the highest percentage increase above the regional average (13.8 kilograms per inhabitant);

The awareness campaign 'Recycle and Breathe', in which these awards are framed, was carried out last year both at a local and regional level with the aim of highlighting the environmental benefit of depositing light packaging in the Yellow container, linked in particular to air quality.

Since the beginning of 2019, the 'Think with the lungs' campaign is underway, which results in the positive impact of the previous campaign and highlights the importance of recycling containers in the yellow container as a good daily tool to achieve breathing better air

With this new campaign, a new contest has been announced that will reward, in 2020, the municipalities with the highest recycling rates in the Region during this year.
