The General Director of Cultural Assets, Juan Antonio Lorca, visited the Noria Grande de Abarán today to supervise the relocation of the axis of the wheel, which is being repaired by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture thanks to a new investment of 55,000 euros.
The repair project has been drafted by the engineer Antonio Sabater Soto.
The new actions are being carried out as a result of the failure that occurred in its operation a few months ago, when the wheel moved due to the breakage of its clamping axis.
This displacement caused the upper radii to rub against the factory works, preventing the turning movement.
During the inspection carried out from Cultural Assets, the deterioration of the wooden shovels and damage to the metallic mechanism of the wheel was also verified as the inner and outer discs connected to the shaft separated.
The Norias de Abarán were declared a year of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the category of ethnographic place of interest, by the regional government.
The declaration includes the four ferris wheels (their aqueducts and rafts) that are preserved in the area, highlighting the Noria Grande de Abarán, a wooden construction (except the shaft and metal plates) made in the early nineteenth century and rebuilt in 1951. It is one of the largest diameter devices that are currently preserved, with almost 12 meters high, 64 blades and 128 buckets.
