During the past year, each of the inhabitants of Abarán recycled 20.2 kilograms of packaging in the yellow container compared to 11.8 kilograms of the regional average
The inhabitants of Abarán were during the past year those that more light containers deposited in the yellow container, which locates to this municipality like most recyclable of all the Region by second consecutive year.
Specifically, each of the inhabitants of Abarán recycled 20.2 kilos of cans, bricks and plastic containers during the year 2018, above the 18.8 registered in this same municipality the previous year and 11.8 kilograms of the regional average.
This recognition to the most recyclable municipalities is part of the Recycling Awards 2018, organized jointly by the General Directorate of Environment and Mar Menor, Ecoembes, the environmental organization that coordinates the recycling of packaging in Spain, and the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia.
This initiative, which was disseminated in the context of the public awareness campaign 'Recycle and Breathe', aims to raise awareness among the citizens of the region of the importance of recycling cans, bricks and plastic containers consumed in the domestic environment to continue advancing at a rate that in one year has increased by 10 percent, from the 10.7 kilos per inhabitant in 2017 to the 11.8 kilos per inhabitant collected during the past year.
The general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Consuelo Rosauro, stressed that the management of waste is one of the priorities included in the Circular Economy Strategy of the Region and stressed that the 17,241 tons of plastic containers, cans and briks recycled during the past year "must be added another 17,992 tons of paper and cardboard and another 2,698 tons from the door-to-door collection of commercial paper and cardboard." These data reflect that the citizens of the Region are increasingly committed to the recycling and aware of the importance of protecting the environment ".
In addition to the recognition of Abarán as the most recyclable municipality, an award worth 6,000 euros, Cehegín was also awarded 5,000 euros as the municipality with the highest percentage increase above the regional average (13.8 kilograms per inhabitant);
and Fuente Álamo, which with a recycling rate of 7.7 kilograms per inhabitant received 4,000 euros, being the municipality that recorded the largest percentage increase in the collection of plastic, cans and bricks (yellow container) from those with values ​​below of the regional average.
The awareness campaign 'Recycle and Breathe', in which these awards are framed, was carried out last year both at a local and regional level with the aim of highlighting the environmental benefit of depositing light packaging in the Yellow container, linked in particular to air quality.
Since the beginning of 2019, the 'Think with the lungs' campaign is underway, which results in the positive impact of the previous campaign and highlights the importance of recycling containers in the yellow container as a good daily tool to achieve breathing better air
With this new campaign, a new contest has been announced that will reward, in 2020, the municipalities with the highest recycling rates in the Region during this year.
