The General Directorate of the Environment of the Region of Murcia, the Federation of Murcia Municipalities and Ecoembes deliver the 2019 Recycling Awards in a virtual meeting with representatives of the three municipalities, who have become the most recyclers of packaging last year.
Abar n won the first prize for the third consecutive time, while Beniel and La Uni n took the second and third prizes respectively. The inhabitants of Abar n were, during the past year, the ones who deposited the most plastic containers, cans and cartons in the yellow container, which makes this municipality the most recycler in the entire Region n of Murcia for the third consecutive year. Specifically, each of the inhabitants of Abar n deposited 22.6 kilos of cans, briks and plastic containers in the yellow container during 2019, above the 20.2 kilos registered in this same municipality in the year above and the 13.5 kilograms of the regional average.
For their part, the municipalities of Beniel and La Uni n have also been awarded for the percentage increase in their contributions in the yellow container. These awards, which have been announced in a virtual meeting with the mayors representing the municipalities, are part of the contest "Recycling Awards", organized jointly by the General Directorate of the Environment and Mar Menor, the Federation of -2- Municipalities of the Region of Murcia; and Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organization that coordinates the recycling of packaging in Spain. The contest, which was broadcast over the past year on radio, digital press and social networks in different waves, was contextualized within the autonomous citizen awareness campaign "Think with the Lungs", whose objective has been to make the citizens of the Region aware of the importance of recycling cans, briks and plastic containers in the yellow container, and its direct contribution to the preservation of air quality and care of the environment .
In addition to the recognition of Abar n as the most recycler municipality, an award endowed with 6,000 euros, Beniel has also been awarded 5,000 euros as the municipality with the highest percentage increase above the regional average. And to La Uni n, which received 4,000 euros for being the municipality that registered the highest percentage increase in the collection of plastic containers, cans and cartons.
The amount of these awards will go to projects for the enjoyment of the residents of these municipalities. Such as the improvement of playgrounds, the incorporation of biosaludable devices to promote exercise among the elderly, or projects aimed at promoting the selective collection of containers.
Since the start of 2020, a second stage of the 'Think with your lungs' campaign has been underway and with it a new edition of the Recycling Awards contest, which is already nearing completion. In the spring of 2021, it will be known who are the municipalities with the most recyclers in the Region of Murcia this year that is about to end. Recycling data in the Region of Murcia During 2019, the Region of Murcia recycled 45,719 tons of plastic containers, cans, cartons, and paper and cardboard, contributing significantly to the 1,505,661 tons recycled nationwide.
This was thanks to the fact that each Murcian deposited 13.5kg of plastic, metal and carton containers in the yellow container (15.2% more than the previous year). In the case of the blue container, and with an average of 13.9 kg of paper and cardboard containers per citizen (13.5% more than in 2018).
