Abarán celebrated the International Day of the midwife, which falls on May 5 with a solidarity march by the route of the Norias.

This activity was promoted by the Midwives Association of the Region of Murcia, encouraged by the IMC (International Confederation of Midwives) and FAME (Federation of Midwives of Spain), together with the City of Abarán.

The march of 5 miles, was developed by the "Route of the Norias", whose main park installed an information point "your midwife tells you" for the entire population.

This information item has already been done in other years in Murcia and Cartagena in order to inform and answer questions to the public as well as to inform the work on these issues in the Murcia Health Service (Department of Health and Hospitals).

Under the slogan "No to immortality mother and child in the world", this idea comes from the International Confederation of Midwives which organizes its 29th congress in Durban (South Africa June 2011).

Since this organization was promoted to the Association of Midwives held a march of 5 miles to remind the world that still exists in maternal and child mortality, turning the event into a global celebration.

"In this case we have chosen as a reference for progress in the Region of Murcia Abarán village where the landscape that provides the route of the Norias make this meeting a day of coexistence and community midwives," said the organization.

Midwives have been universally recognized as first-line health workers for mothers and newborns in the global campaign to reduce both morbidity and mortality (WHO-World Health Organization).

The midwife develops their skills in sexual and reproductive health and these are addressed to women, family and community throughout the life cycle, as well as newborn care during the first month of life.

Together we will walk thousands of miles, circling the world, to proclaim our commitment to improve maternal and newborn care for all women and their babies anywhere in the world (BMI).
