The first democratically elected municipal level in Spain took place on April 3, 1979.
The Spanish then elected by universal suffrage, free and secret ballot for mayors and councilors.
Nearly four months earlier, on December 6, 1978, the Spanish people had ratified the Constitution by referendum on the values of harmony, freedom, justice, equality and political pluralism, defending the social and democratic State law, recognition of the rights of man and citizen, the division of powers and parliamentary monarchy.
Since then, Spain had the great leap toward modernity and alignment with surrounding countries.
In thirty years, the transformation of our country has been spectacular thanks to the establishment of a new state set by the Constitution regarding the existence of the autonomous communities and local governments, which makes Spain one of the most decentralized countries in the world.
