In memory of the Mirabal sisters
November 25 was declared International Day Against Violence Against Women in Latin American feminist first meeting, held in Bogotá in July 1981.
At that meeting, the women reported violence against women in all spheres of society, abuse and murder in the home, rape, sexual harassment, and general violence against women, including torture and abuse suffered by political prisoners.
This date was chosen to remember the assassination of the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa), three activists killed in 1960 at the hands of the secret police of dictator Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
In 1999 the UN gave official status to this date.
